Department of Climate and Water Resources

The Department of Climate and Water Resources carries out scientific research on global and regional climate change and their consequences for human and for the environment, in the context of observations and future projections. The methods of adaptation to hazards driven by extreme weather events are analysed, as well as social conditions of activities related to climate change consequences. The results are significantly increasing interpretation and understanding of the changes, and numerous publications have gained broad recognition in international scale, reflected in many citations.

Staff members of the Department are represent different fields of science. They participated in numerous research projects founded by European Commission, Polish ministerial grants (via National Science Centre), Swiss-Polish Research Programme or Polish-Norwegian Research Cooperation. For many years, professor Kundzewicz has collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).

Research projects:

NCN OPUS - Interpretation of Change in Flood-related Indices based on Climate Variability (FloVar). Project No. 2017/27/B/ST10/00924, (2018-2021) - Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

NCN OPUS - Vulnerability to extreme weather events: mapping natural hazards and related activities. Analysis of selected sectors and infrastructures at risk due to extreme meteorological events in Wielkopolska region. Project No. 2018/31/B/HS4/03223, (2019-2022) - Head of the project - dr. I. Pińskwar.

Finalised research projects:

NCN MINIATURA - Mortality during heat waves in cities and in rural areas, on the example of the Wielkopolskie and Małopolskie voivodships. Project No 2017/01/X/HS4/01029 (2017 -2018) Head of the project – dr. Dariusz Graczyk.

NCN PRELUDIUM - Municipalities facing extreme weather events. Ability to deal with natural disasters of municipalities in Poland. Project No. UMO-2014/15/N/HS6/04129 (2015-2018) Head of the project – dr. Adam Choryński.

Polish-Norwegian Research Cooperation

CHASE-PL - Climate change impact assessment for selected sectors in Poland. No: POL-NOR/200799/90/2014 realised within Polish-Norwegian Research Programme (2014-2017). Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

Polish-Swiss Research Programme

Research project FLORIST „Flood risk on the northern foothills of the Tatra Mountains" financed within Polish-Swiss Research Programme No PSPB- 153/2010, (2011- 2016). Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

7th EU Framework Programme

In 2012 realisation of the project STAR-FLOOD „STrengthening And Redesigning European FLOOD risk practices - Towards appropriate and resilient flood risk governance arrangements" has begun. Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

InContext - Individuals in Context: Supportive Environments for Sustainable Living, No 2651917 (2011-2013). Head of the project – dr hab. Piotr Matczak

6th EU Framework Programme

Three integrated projects have been conducted within the 6th EU Framework Programme by the Department. In the project "ADAM. Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: Supporting European Climate Policy" the Department have took part in three work packages: scenarios, adaptation and strategies assessment (2006-2009). Within the project "WATCH. Water and global change" the Department have been involved in a block of work packages realising researches related to floods and methodological issues. In the project "ENSEMBLES. Ensemble-based predictions of climate changes and their impacts". The Department was active in several work packages that included scenarios and consequences of changes in extremes. The Institutes' participation was coordinated by prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

Projects financed by the National Science Centre:

In the years 2011-2013 the project „Mathematic model linking temperature changes in large scale with climatic factors". Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.

Participation in research projects realised by other scientific institutions:

Within years 2012-2014 project „Assessing the sensitivity of water resources to global change at the regional, national and global scale" was realised in cooperation with Potsdam Institute for Climatic Impact Research (PIK), Germany. Head of the project – prof. dr hab. Z.W. Kundzewicz.
