Department of Climate and Water Resources

The Department of Climate and Water Resources carries out scientific research on climate and water systems and links between them. Earlier studies maintained within the Department were focusing mainly on agricultural landscape and linkages with the vegetation structure, now the area of interest of the Department has broadened. The Department is undertaking research also on the problems of urbanised areas, including: the risk of heat waves, the urban heat island effect, and urban flooding as an effect of extreme rainfall. Studies on global and regional climate change and their consequences for human and for the environment, in the context of observations and future projections are broadly developed. The methods of adaptation to hazards driven by extreme weather events are analysed, as well as social conditions of activities related to climate change consequences. The results are significantly increasing interpretation and understanding of the changes, and numerous publications have gained broad recognition in international scale, reflected in many citations.

Staff members of the Department are represent different fields of science. Activity of researchers led by Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz, includes participation in numerous research projects founded by European Commission, Polish ministerial grants (via National Science Centre) and Swiss-Polish Research Programme. For many years, professor Kundzewicz has collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). In the years 2006-2012 he was a member of an international Advisory Group of the 7th EU Framework Programme – Environment (including climate).

Finalised research projects:

Polish-Norwegian Research Cooperation

CHASE-PL - Climate change impact assessment for selected sectors in Poland. No: POL-NOR/200799/90/2014 realised within Polish-Norwegian Research Programme (2014-2017). Head of the project – prod. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicz.

Polish-Swiss Research Programme

Research project FLORIST „Flood risk on the northern foothills of the Tatra Mountains" financed within Polish-Swiss Research Programme No PSPB- 153/2010, (2011- 2016). Head of the project – prod. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicz.

7th EU Framework Programme

In 2012 realisation of the project STAR-FLOOD „STrengthening And Redesigning European FLOOD risk practices - Towards appropriate and resilient flood risk governance arrangements" has begun. Head of the project – prod. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicz.
Polish-Swiss Research Programme

6th EU Framework Programme

Three integrated projects have been conducted within the 6th EU Framework Programme by the Department. In the project "ADAM. Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: Supporting European Climate Policy" the Department have took part in three work packages: scenarios, adaptation and strategies assessment (2006-2009). Within the project "WATCH. Water and global change" the Department have been involved in a block of work packages realising researches related to floods and methodological issues. In the project "ENSEMBLES. Ensemble-based predictions of climate changes and their impacts". The Department was active in several work packages that included scenarios and consequences of changes in extremes. The Institutes' participation was coordinated by prof. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicza.

Projects financed by the National Science Centre

In the years 2011-2013 the project „Mathematic model linking temperature changes in large scale with climatic factors". Head of the project – prod. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicz.

Participation in research projects realised by other scientific institutions

Within years 2012-2014 project „Assessing the sensitivity of water resources to global change at the regional, national and global scale" is realised in cooperation with Potsdam Institute for Climatic Impact Research (PIK), Germany. Head of the project – prod. dr hab. Z. W. Kundzewicz.
