The Department of Climate and Water Resources carries out scientific research on climate and water systems and links between them. The work embraces various scales, from individual sites (point scale), through regional, national, continental, to global scales. Important example of research interests in the Department is the analysis of climate extremes (droughts, intense precipitation, floods, heat waves). Tendencies and trends in time series of observations of meteorological and hydrological variables and climatic indicators are studied. The work experience in the Department also includes analysis of climate projections for the future, provided by global climate modelling centers. A particular focus of the Department has been climate change impacts and adaptation, with particular emphasis on water resources. Within the Department, unique social studies of climate impacts and adaptation to climate change have been made. Water and climate balance in rural areas (agriculture and forestry) is another important domain of interest of the Department. However, the Department also deals with urbanized areas, e.g. embracing the problems of heat waves, heat island effect, or inundations due to intense rain. Staff members of the Department, led by Professor Zbigniew W. Kundzewicz, have participated in numerous research projects in Poland and abroad, published many high-impact publications, and presented invited oral contributions to scientific meetings, including many prestigious ones. Until now, the Department has participated in four integrated projects and one ERA-NET project of the Fifth and Sixth Framework Programme of the European Union (EU), on the broad area of extreme meteorological and hydrological events, their consequences (including environmental and socio-economic aspects), and the adaptation methods. The Department has developed excellent multi-disciplinary contacts with scientists from Poznań universities, namely the Poznań University of Life Sciences, the Adam Mickiewicz University and the Poznań University of Technology. The Department has maintained good working contacts with a plethora of foreign scientists and scientific institutions, and – most prominently - the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Research in Potsdam, Germany.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
Recent research projects financed by European Union: ADAM (Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: Supporting European Climate Policy) (2006-2009) Integrated Project of the 6. Framework Programme of European Union. The Department participated in work blocks on scenarios, adaptation to extremes, and appraisal of strategies. ENSEMBLES (Ensemble-based predictions of climate changes and their impacts) Integrated Project of the 6. Framework Programme of European Union. The Department participated in work blocks on impact assessments corresponding toc limate scenarios.
Research projects realized jointly with foreign partners: „Assessing the sensitivity of water resources to global change at the regional, national and global scale”. Agreement on co-operation with the Potsdam Institute for Climatic Impact Research, in Potsdam (Germany). TEAM Head: prof. dr hab. Zbigniew W.
